The Nepal Mountaineering Association has classified 28 mountains as trekking peaks, none of these exceed 7,000m in height and are allowed to be climbed without an expedition permit. This classification was created as a mid-point between hiking and full mountaineering. Don’t be fooled though, whilst the peaks vary in terms of terrain and difficulty most do require some element of climbing, so good physical fitness is imperative. These peaks aren’t as technically demanding as the higher ones, however, some knowledge and experience using climbing gear, such as an ice axe and crampons, is useful. Undertaking an ascent up any of these trekking peaks is serious, it requires time, preparation and equipment, so make sure you think through your decision and start planning and prepping well in advance of your trek.

These are the various trekking peaks within the Annapurna Region:

Pisang Peak climbing

Situated above Pisang village, Pisang peak’s maximum altitude is 6,091m. It is a relatively isolated spot and quite a tough ascent but the views from the top are very much worth it. The trek isn’t particularly technical, but physical and mental strength is required. The trek starts at the beginning of Annapurna Circuit, after summiting you will head through the Thorong La pass before finishing in Jomsom.

Chulu west Peak climbing

The duration of this trek is 18 days, and 5–6 hours a day is devoted to walking. Considered one of the best peaks in Nepal, Chulu West has views over the surrounding mountains as well as the lush green landscapes below. Beginning at Besisahar, the route takes you through the Manang Valley which has an incredibly interesting and unique landscape. The valley gets minimal rainfall and is therefore incredibly dry and desolate, which is very different to other parts of the country. Chulu West peak’s maximum altitude is 6,419m and it is best climbed in spring or autumn.

Tharpu Chuli Peak Climbing

Also known as Tent Peak, is perfect for those wanting to advance their mountaineering skills. Known for its unique shape, Tent Peak is located in the Annapurna Conservation Area opposite Machapuchare. From the summit you will have fantastic views over some of the region’s most famous peaks including Annapurna I and III. Beginning in Nayapul the route takes you to both Annapurna and Machapuchare base camps before meandering through a number of villages, in these you can learn about the local Gurung people and get a glimpse into their daily lives. The expedition will last 18 days and the maximum altitude reached is 5,695m.

Mardi Himal Peak Climbing

Mardi Himal is great for beginners, allowing you to experience trekking in the Himalayas without needing technical knowledge. In this 12 day trek, the maximum altitude reached is 4,500m. Compared to other trips in the Annapurna region, Mardi Himal is relatively quiet as it avoids the busy Annapurna base camp. Starting from Phedi, you are guaranteed to see some spectacular mountain views, an array of interesting flora and fauna, and visit a number of interesting villages.
